Learning a new language always presents some difficulty but music can make it easier to learn a foreign language.

Were you ever surprised when a song that you haven’t heard for some time got you to sing along, clearly singing the lyrics of the song? Catchy advertising jingles and music stick in the minds of people far longer than memorized data and names of places and people. This is because more areas of the brain are engaged by music than language.

This is one of the better options when learning a new language, practically better than listening to language lessons on audio tapes. And it can be more fun, as you can sing and dance to the music while you learn grammar and vocabulary.

Learn through TV shows

There have been stories of people perfecting their American accent simply by watching U.S. TV shows. Their English teacher did not teach them how to have the American accent, but with them getting entertained while learning,it made learning the language more fun and easy.

Identify the language of your choice

What is good about this language learning process is that you enjoy the time you spend while learning, and yet you retain what you have learned longer. You can also choose the language to learn. You will still need to have the right textbook and dictionary to guide you. However, there are numerous materials you can download from audio and video streaming and file sharing sites. From there, you can just search for sites that provide lyrics to the songs you have selected. Some only have the lyrics in the original language. However, there are also sites that provide both, the original language as well as translation of the lyrics into English. Print them out and use them as your guide.

Learn the grammar

It is still very essential that you go from beginner to advance, meaning you also have to start learning the language formally, when you are attending language classes or doing it on your own. Music helps in strengthening your language retention, and learning new words and phrases to augment your formal learning. You also get to learn the accent, which is very important. It also helps if you can find shows in the language you wish to learn. Grammar rules are even easier to remember when you recall verses from the songs that you have listened to.

Keep your focus

Even if you find that learning a new language through music makes it easier and faster, do not be over-confident. Focus on one language at a time. It is quite difficult to master two or more languages at the same time. For beginners, start with nursery rhymes. YouTube has plenty of nursery rhymes translated into different languages. Animated fairy tales are also available in different languages, and most of them have subtitles, which is a great help.

Once you have found the songs in a particular genre that you like, download them and store them either on your computer or your mobile device so that you can listen to the songs as often as you wish. Sing out loud, pronouncing each word carefully, as this helps your mouth move to form the right shape for each word. After several tries, you will find that you can recognize parts of the lyrics, understand the meaning of phrases and whole sentences and eventually remember the whole song and understand its translation, as well.
